Lemon Bar Non-Dairy Ice Cream from @[jeni's](brand-5cb6aadf2e310f0004f169f6) 🍦

This is one non-dairy flavor currently offered by prolific Columbus, Ohio ice cream company, Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream. Primarily made of Coconut Cream, Cane Sugar, Lemon Curd and Water*, this was a wonderful addition to a birthday celebration on a warm Wednesday evening in May of 2024 (Happy birthday to Cael!).

Typically I am not the biggest fan of coconut cream based ice creams but I thought it worked well here. Usually the taste of coconut overpowers the other flavors leaving the depth of flavor one-dimensional. This is not the case here. I definitely got a blend of the lemony tartness with the coconut. The cane sugar adds sweetness and helps maintain the smooth and soft texture (by reducing the formations of ice crystals in the churning process). Thus, resulting in a final product I found to be smooth, rich and very creamy; something a lot of other vegan ice cream bases struggle with. As for the toppings, the lemon curd is an interesting choice. It tastes crisp, fresh, and tart. Pretty unique if you ask me. Furthermore, there is a crunchy element coming from pieces of shortbread crust, which are fairly neutral in taste, but good. Additionally, I can't forget to mention the sugar cone, which happens to be vegan and so very tasty.

Now, this flavor of nice cream definitely checks all of the boxes in terms of texture. However, I thought the shortbread crust could be improved so that it adds to the overall taste of the dessert, rather than being plain. And, as adventurous as I am, I cannot get fully on board with lemon ice cream. It is pleasant the several times I've ordered it, but defintely not something I crave after having it. Something about clean tasting ice cream just does not do it for me. But, that is just personal preference of course.

All in all, I rate this a 7.5/10. Even if it's not my favorite, I still think it is good. Punchy, lemony freshness and a shortbread crunch; who knew that lemon ice cream could work? Not surprised that Jeni found a way to pull this combination off. If you are looking to find some, it is one of two flavors that are vegan/non-dairy in-store at the Short North location. Alternatively, if you live outside of Columbus, or simply do not want to travel to their storefront locations, they also sell it along with 7 other vegan flavors on their website that ship to all 50 states here in the U.S.. Give it a shot and broaden your horizons.

This is a hidden menu item at Portia's Cafè. Much like the ever famous Super Cindy Pocket, it is named after the regular customer who created it. GF waffle batter with flax, hemp, and chia seeds, blueberry, strawberry, and banana. Topped with Soy-Free Earth Balance butter. This Waffle's packin'!

I love the texture of the GF batter. Crispy-ish on the outside, but soft & fluffy on the inside. The seeds add a lot of nourishment, but I hardly noticed any additional changes to flavor or consistency. However, the natural sweetness of the bananas, and the fresh taste of the berries are delightful. 

Portia's Cafè is a health-forward eatery, so this fits right in. All in all I would rate a 9.5/10. The fruits add a lot of moisture and make the inside very soft. (If you ask they can cook it longer if that's not your thing.) Nonetheless, this is my new favorite. I cannot recommend it more. I order it so much that my coworkers call me Diego, Haha!

Peanut Butter & Banana Toast from @woodvhouse 

This is a special from March 2024. House made banana bread, house made peanut buttercream, bananas, peanuts, and maple syrup.

Like most things from Woodhouse the presentation is beautiful! Additionally, the banana bread is so tasty. I like the texture of it, just dense enough to hold the toppings without crumbling apart. Moreover, I really enjoyed the sweet and salty combination between the fresh banana and the peanuts. And the buttercream ties everything together with its soft, creamy, nuttiness.

Overall I give this a 9/10. a bit sweet for my palate but great nonetheless. Bonus points that Woodhouse Vegan is close to Goodale Park. I took mine to-go and enjoyed a beautiful (windy) day!

It's been over a decade since the last time I had Raising Cane's, since they don't have anything vegan 😕 Thankfully, Seitan's Realm made this not-so subtle vegan spinoff of the national fast food chain's Box Combo; three chikun fingers, crinkle cut fries, and texas toast served with a side of coleslaw and Insane sauce. (Drink came separate).

This is no ordinary (vegan) chicken basket. This is the best to date! The chikun fingers are soo good, I love the texture and taste. Albeit they are not like the chicken fingers from cane's, these are super dense but still tasty. The fries and insane sauce however are on point! The fries are, well, fries. haha. Not too salty and with a good crispy outer layer. The sauce is tangy, peppery, and a little sweet. And the toast has all the buttery goodness with no animals hurt in the process 🥰🤤

All in all I give this a 9.5/10 as it is very delicious, but the sauce portion was a bit small and it ran out quick. Regardless, everything else was great. This is without a doubt my favorite special from the Realm, I cannot recommend it enough the next time it returns to the menu!

Chick'n N' Pancake from @4thandstate 🍗&🥞

This is a semi-secret menu item at 4th, appearing only on the online menu. Tempeh chick'n fried in house and coated in hot maple, alongisde a house made pancake topped with powdered sugar, and whipped cream and maple syrup on the side. 

Okay, now I know what you're thinking.. No, the pancake is not usually shaped like the world's most famous rodent; I brought my @disney Mickey Waffler and asked Chad if I could have the pancake made to look like Mickey Mouse (he said yes).

..And it was delicious! Tempeh is a great chicken substitute, as it is firm and absorbs flavor well. The breading was really good and I liked that there was a little spicy kick to it. The pancake was fluffy and a bit mild in taste, but the chocolate chips and syrup make it good and sweet. The presentation was great, I love the cayenne pepper dusting on the chick'n (and the Mickey pancake is just so damn cute).

Overall I rate a 9/10. Sweet, savory, and crunchy, I recommend trying this one for yourself. If you ask nicely I might even let you bring my Mickey waffler!

Shamrock Milkshake from @4th&State 🌇

As for the shamrock shake, I thought it was very reminiscent of a McDonald's shamrock shake but better since it's vegan LOL. It is made with the same shamrock syrup and Thin Mint garnish as the french toast. When mixed with vanilla nice cream and plant milk, it's minty and refreshing. I give it 9/10. I hope i'm as lucky as the Irish and get to have another next month 🍀

This one's a special from March 2022. 4th & State signature french toast with shamrock and chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, and Thin Mint cookie crumbles. 

I'm a big fan of the french toast at 4th, largely because the batter they use is really good. You can taste the cinnamon and nutmeg and it is pleasant. I also really like that french toast is always nice and fluffy. The toppings are generally fun and this special was no exception. Very minty and chocolatey. (so thankful that Thin Mints are accidentally vegan!) Fun. Flavorful. A great Sunday brunch dish. I rate 8/10.

This is a flavored sweet tea made from tea (of course), cane sugar, fructose, citric acid, natural flavors, pectin, and sucrose. Comes in a cute can that is a very decent size given they sell them for ~$1.

Peace, tea and peaches are three of my favorite things so i decided to give it a try. I drank one in between rock climbing and I thought it was good. Straight out of the drink cooler it is so crisp and refreshing. I enjoyed that the peach flavor does taste like peaches. A little on the strong side but I love peach so I appreciated that. (peach flavored anything is the best). I liked the tea but it is very sweet; checked the nutrition guide and it said it contains about 77% of your daily value of sugar, so best to drink in moderation. 

Despite being a bit unhealthy it is a nice, refreshing drink to have every now and again. Plus, a 24 fl oz can for about a dollar is a steal. I rate 8/10. If you like sweet tea I do recommend. They're pretty easy to find in your local gas station or convenience store. They also keep them stocked at @climbchambers which is where I took this photo!

Cranberry Pecan Tart from @happylittletreats.sn 🍭

This pastry is a seasonal item circa January 2024. Filled with cranberry jam and pecans, and beautifully coated with pink frosting and (more) chopped pecans. Truly pleasing to the eyes.

The cranberries were a great choice for a pop tart. They are tart, with a citrusy flavor and a little sweetness that adds depth to the moist center. Speaking of depth, mine was stuffed! So big and very filling. The outside was good and flaky too. Maybe just a tad bit crunchy around the edges but nothing egregious. The pecans were a fun choice that looks pretty and texture wise contrasts the soft cranberry jam center.

I'm a huge fan of contrasts that complement so this one won me over big time. I give it a 9.25/10. Highly reccomend it if they still have some. & A big thank you to my good friend Mazzy Grisak for the Happy Little Treats reccommendation, I'm so glad I got to try this!

This one's a weekly special from December 2023. I've never had a baconator from Wendy's (or any meat-based burger for that matter), so I can't compare it to the OG. However! Compared to other vegan burgers this one was super tasty! 

Besides the Pretzilla pretzel bun, everything is made in house. The burger patties and bacun are especially to die for. They have a good "meaty" texture to them, and are smoky, savory, scrumptious.  So much better than the store bought vegan options imo. Cheeez and mayo portions were a little on the heavy side, making this tricky to eat without the toppings slipping out of the bun. Still really good, though, if you don't mind a little mess.

All in all, I love the constant creativity from this punk rock kitchen. I give this one an 8/10.

This is one of those specials I wish they would keep!
