This Very Good Steak by the Very Good Butchers is indeed very, very good! The

first ingredient of these is jackfruit, but you would never guess! The rest of the ingredients are also quite pure and pronounceable.

My partner and I loved them! The texture and flavor is so tasty, and all we did was throw them on the grill (package comes with 2 steaks). I imagine they would taste even better if bbq’d, which is the first listed way of cooking them on the packaging; the other 2 ways being grill or oven. This also paired so well with our country potatoes. 🥔 😋 I’m tempted to buy these again the next time I have an omnivore over, because I think even meat eaters would be impressed by these. Best of all, they’re #crueltyfree and have no bones about them! 🦴

You want the good news?! This juicy, hearty Vegan steak is a winner!! It's tender,

soft, and delicious. Very filling! It's made from seitan and jackfruit, plus it has a ton of umami flavors from mushrooms. It has got mean smoky flavor and chew. The bad news - The Very Good Butchers filed for bankruptcy on April 28, 2023. I'm running back to Meijer to buy the rest of this aHHmazing product. 😭

So, a handful of this brand’s products popped up as #groceryoutletfinds recently. Having never seen

them in stores before, I was filled with excitement — which rapidly transformed into dejection when I learned from @agreene428 that they are in the process of shuttering operations due to bankruptcy. Sometimes (but not always,) it can be a bad sign when products turn up at my favorite discount grocer. I hope it’s OK to file my review as the last of the inventory trickles out to retailers.

Each slim box contains two individually vacuum-packed #mockmeat steaks. They have a deep pinkish-red color (from beets) and are sort of patty-shaped, more akin to a hamburger steak than a solidly meaty slab. The steaks are exploding with mushroomy umami and very seasoned, with prominent notes of alliums and pepper. Packed with #protein — a whopping 48g apiece! — but also a frankly alarming amount of sodium. I baked mine, which I don’t think was the best move because it developed a hard, dry crust on the outside, like bread — perhaps unsurprisingly, since wheat gluten is the second ingredient. Were I ever to find these steaks again (unlikely,) I would try pan-frying them, as it seems like it’d produce a better texture. Still, even after being prepared in the less-than-ideal oven conditions, the interior remained tender and chewy. The jackfruit and dried mushrooms lent it an enjoyable fibrousness, too.

I was feeling ravenous after a workout and nearly got through one whole steak, which was actually quite a lot of food. The only thing which slowed me down was the hefty dose of salt, which came to be oppressive on the taste buds toward the end of the meal. Under ordinary circumstances, I don’t think I’d eat more than half a piece in one sitting. Be sure to keep a drink nearby, too! Although this #meatalternative product has its flaws, I’m still saddened to hear of the closure of any company creating vegan options. Rest in peace, Very Good Butchers.

Excellent product! Decent ingredients and loads of protein! 24g for 1/2 of the steak. The

inside stays fairly soft and chewy and the outside got crispy which we really enjoyed. My husband ate 1 entire steak, I couldn’t finish it because it was very big. In no way is it like steak from an animal and I’m very much ok with that.

These were absolutely delicious - I don’t need them to be red (because the idea

of a bloody steak isn’t appealing) - but it’s a nice way to sneak beetroot into a meal. Devoured with veg, vegan gravy, and vegan mayo. LOVE this brand!
