GLUTEN FREE BUT VERY SWEET COPY OF AN ORIGINAL
What strikes me is that in the world of vegan cuisine and food marketing, there is so much emphasis on imitating existing omnivore “examples”. In order to create similar textures, similar tastes even, of food items that have a long history of perpetuating animal exploitation. Same goes for gluten free food items that move heaven and earth to become almost indistinguishable from the gluten containing “originals”.
We had better liberate our creativity and invent new textures and tastes, only plant-based, and emancipate from a food history paved with the blood and suffering of our animal friends.
As for these Wafers al cacao from North-Italian brand Schär, they do indeed present a perfect copy of the classic crispy chocolate filled thin rectangular waffles that have been existing for over a century in our Belgian collective subconscious as “Cent Wafers”.
Taste/bite: The sweetness level is high. Over 30 g of sugar per 100 g of product. The chocolate aroma is present, but subtle.
Ingredients: Not organic. Schär’s specialty or market niche is gluten free, not organic and not vegan in the first place either. So this is an accidentally vegan product. Instead of Wheat flour, potato starch is used, and also soy and rice flour. The high fat content comes from coconut oil. and wholemeal wheat flour. With 32 g of sugars on 100 g of product, the sweetness level is high and addictive. 27 g of fat, mainly saturated make up for the high energy density of this product. Low to medium protein content of 4,6 g per 100 g. There is no indication that the cocoa is from respectful sourcing. Another bad point. 👎👎👎
🤔🧐Nutritionally speaking, a perfect example of an energy dense and nutrient poor food item, to avoid or to use scarcely.
Shape/Conditioning: 125 g single sheet plastic film pouch. Pretty minimalist. There is an explicit invitation to separate your waste fractions, even if it sounds a bit like a greenwashing slogan (“Every day is Earth Day” … on a plastic packaging ).
Price: I paid 2,50 € (May 2023). Acceptable for this type of treat.
The brand is from the German speaking upper Northern part of Italy. Their products visually stand out in stores because everything is bright yellow, their trademark colour.
