Lily was born at a large Iowa University into their dairy testing facility. Here, Holstein and Jersey cows are repeatedly impregnated and then milked until they are sent to the school beef transitioning program. The school enlists over 900 cows each each year. With birth cycles and assuming around half of the births are female, around 450 young female cows are in this program per school year.
Lily was born with hydrocephalus, water on the brain. She was blind and too weak to stand. The university sent her to a feed lot where she wouldn't have even lived to be slaughtered. When we heard about her, we knew we had to save her. I drove to the border of Illinois, where we met the owner of Iowa Farm Sanctuary, who graciously drove her 4 hours to us. We had no idea how sick she actually was. She was severely underweight, has a systemic infection, anemia, and a severe protein deficiency and covered in months old feces. Her growth will always be stunted, so she's our small little baby cow. She has been the sweetest baby. She constantly wants human attention and is the most trusting and loving girl.

lizmaselli I'm so lucky the owners of the sanctuary let me do what I do for them. I do the easy work in comparison, though! The amount of physical labor and work the caregiver/ operations manager/ board member (Sandy) does is astronomical. We are all volunteer based even the board members, so we're really lucky to have so much help! 2 likesReply
