Daysoft

It finally came time for me to order new #contacts (I wear mostly daily disposables and glasses on occasion.) I thought back to a conversation I had earlier this year (https://www.abillion.com/posts/63e36081c22df0345d111501?utm_source=app&utm_medium=post-sharing) in search of vegan and #crueltyfree lenses; the brand I usually wear (1-Day Acuvue Moist from J&J) is almost certainly tested on animals. Daysoft makes two types of contacts — Classic and Silk — the former being better for sensitive eyes and the latter boasting improved hydration. Based on my use of Acuvue Moist, a tool on the Daysoft website recommended I try Silk. I’ve included a couple photos with my old contacts (Daysoft on top, J&J on the bottom) to allow for easier packaging comparison. #noanimaltesting #stopanimaltesting

Since the Daysoft packaging uses less plastic, there was a slight learning curve for me to get comfortable peeling the lens cups away from the foil backing. In addition to the printed instructions, there are also videos online to clarify how it’s done. The lenses themselves feel ever-so-slightly thicker/more rigid and more curved than Acuvue; it took me about 30 minutes to get accustomed to the new sensation of these on my eyes. Although they feel marginally less comfortable, the visual acuity they provide is excellent, and I’m sure I’ll get used to them with time. I spend most of my workday on a computer performing visual tasks (and run/work out in my free time,) so had they been unsuitable for sports or my job, I would have sent them back for a refund. #vision #medical

Overall, I’m pretty pleased with these lenses. They get the job done with slimmer packaging and a very competitive price, especially if you order a 6-month supply, which is about $120 with free shipping from the UK. Annually, I expect to save ~$300! I think the only downside is that they don’t make contacts for longer-duration wear (i.e., biweekly or monthly,) nor do they provide toric lenses for the correction of astigmatism. But if you’re a daily spherical contact wearer, these are definitely worth a look.

kyu P.S. @abillion @vikas if you’re listening, I’d appreciate some more expansive product categories :-) 12 likesReply
beckyyy Wow! I don’t wear contacts but appreciate this post as it highlights a cruelty free option that is not only working well but saves you some $!

We live in a non-vegan world and I wouldn’t judge anyone who doesn’t have the funds or access (or frankly the spoons) to adjust any type of necessity for daily functions and/or health (if even possible) but it’s sure lovely to be aware of options/possibilities that exist! 4 likesReply
kyu Thank you for bringing up so many great points :-) I want to emphasize the second part especially — the last thing I want to do is give the idea that medications/vaccines/medical devices are something that we should ever forgo just because it’s structurally not possible to have them in a cruelty-free/vegan context. I’m privileged to be able to pick and choose what goes on my eyes! 2 likesReply

lil-chickpea Thanks for sharing. I also need eyewear. What category did you end up putting it under? 😅 3 likesReply
kyu I went Health & Beauty > Cosmetics & Nails > Eyes — which I think was intended more for eye makeup1 likeReply

sunshineyum I used to wear contact lenses before I got lasik eye surgery, and in South Africa, there were zero cruelty free brands available. This is such a happy and welcome post!!! As my eyes will naturally deteriorate with age, it is so wonderful to know that alternatives are available. 🙏1 likeReply
