With warm, perfectly cooked sweet potato, rice, nori & tempura crunch, Ryo’s sweet potato roll is made with just a few ingredients and yet, it will deeply satisfy every hungry bone in your body.

Ryo is ideally located in the Loop, close to Millennium Park & The Art Institute of Chicago. It’s a fantastic spot for a pre (or post) museum visit, or for carry-out to bring to a concert in the park. I’ve also found Ryo to be a great spot for dining solo, as they have a fab little counter/seating area at the front picture window, which looks onto busy Madison street, where it’s easy to find yourself lost in thought, people watching, or both.

Tonight, the restaurant seating area is actually closed for renovations, although they allow me to wait inside, where I can still enjoy my window view. As I wait, my thoughts zig — from the Dali show, the crowds, the musicians & the skater kids at the steps to the museum — then zag back to the food (which I can’t wait to devour). Yep. Love this place & highly recommend it. (They’re currently only open for delivery & carry-out, due to renovations. Call to confirm dine-in status.)

& thank you @acastillon for asking if I’d made it to Dali, which I almost didn’t! (Had planned to go with friends - we’d mention it when together, yet we didn’t firm-up a date.) Then suddenly (or so it seemed), the show was about to leave town!

Please swipe to see a couple of pieces from the show, along with a few iconic works in the museum.

danielgl Love the narrative 🩵 and living vicariously through your Chicago jaunts. I worked several years at Lake & State, it was always such a luxury being close to the park and Art Institute. So miss my membership there and just peeking in whenever I had a whim to see my favorite pieces.1 likeReply
tamiapple Thanks so much! & yes, an absolute luxury to be able to pop in when you could - so glad you did that for yourself! 😊👍 Who are your favorites? 1 likeReply
danielgl So many!!! My absolute favorite is Richter's Woman Descending a Staircase, of course Hopper, Paschke (Caliente), Hockney (Am Collectors) and it was always peaceful sitting amongst the impressionist paintings. Also there was a small Ando gallery with wooden pillars and rotating exhibits that was always a solace of peace - do you know it?2 likesReply
tamiapple Can’t believe I’m just getting back now. (I haven’t been on the app much for the past several weeks.) Still, no excuse, I’m truly sorry for my delayed response - especially since I so enjoyed reading all you wrote. We have very similar taste in art. Richter’s WDAS is an absolute favorite as well - I wasn’t familiar with him until I encountered that piece at the Modern Wing when it opened & I totally fell for his work. Loved the Richter documentary that came out several years ago, with lots of footage in his studio & there he is with his squeegee. Incredible. And Hopper, Paschke & Hockney, oh my! I need to get back to the AI soon. I don’t know of the small gallery you mentioned, though next time I’m there, I’ll see if someone can direct me. Also, can’t wait for the Ed Paschke Art Center to reopen (I think next June). 1 likeReply
danielgl No worries!! How fun that we coincide with art tastes, I have to check out the Richter documentary. Ed Paschke Art Center!?! I have been out of the loop for too long 😅1 likeReply
tamiapple Thanks so much!! & yes, the Richter documentary is definitely worth a watch. I just googled it because I couldn’t remember the name of it & turns out it’s succinctly titled: Gerhard Richter Painting. (How could someone forget that title??) 😂 I’ve never been to the Paschke art center either, though I’m in the neighborhood frequently, as a bestie lives there & every time I’m there, his art & the generosity of his family for the center is ever present. Not sure why they closed, but I’ll certainly be there once they reopen! 1 likeReply
