Review of Ginger Tofu Eggplant at Thai 72 by kyu
My usual Thai order is drunken noodles or green curry, but on this particular evening, nothing sounded better than a saucy, vegetable-laden stir-fry, served steaming and fragrant from the wok. I was sold when I spotted eggplant and fried #tofu — two personal favorites — in the same dish. Since I’m not the most compelling vegan debater, my typical influence strategy is to just eat whatever I’ve ordered with such intense gusto that everyone in the vicinity begins to wonder why they didn’t get the same. Over the course of the meal, I caught my best friend stealing more than a few envious glances at my plate — mission accomplished! #veganisnotscary
It was a bit heavier on the salt than I prefer, but otherwise really delicious: they didn’t skimp on the eggplant; it was in large chunks and perfectly sautéed so as to be tender yet not mushy. The tofu and other #vegetables were excellent, as well. This dish should be ordered by those who can tolerate (or ideally, love) ginger; I quickly lost count of the myriad threads of spicy, stomach-settling yellow root. I felt that $15 was a fair price given the ample portion. It even came with the conical mound of jasmine rice to the right (I didn’t have to order it separately, as with other restaurants!)
Thai 72 may not have the most imaginative name (it’s a Thai restaurant on W 72nd St . . . ) but it more than makes up for it with filling portions, friendly service, and a charming, cozy space that bustles with neighborhood life.
