Review of Midin Kerabu at Lepau Restaurant by m1tch9i
#locallysourced, #minorityowned
Too often do I take for granted the bountiful range of vegetables available to me in Sarawak… Every foreign friend or family I’ve ever known has loved Midin. And only in my early adult life did I learn it’s adorable English name: fiddlehead ferns!
I’ll tell you though… I’ve had this dish many times in my life in different incarnations. This variation is a simple classic stir fry with garlic. The restaurant ALSO offers a belacan alternative as well; for those looking more a stronger punch of flavour and spice. Be warned: most belacan is NOT vegan friendly as they contain small pounded shrimp.
So! In all honesty, I’d say they cooked it a little under for my preference. But it maintains a really great fibrous crunch for those looking for it. Maybe it could’ve used more garlic for people who love alliums as much as I do.
Not the best fern I’ve fiddled with, but certainly not bad. I’d say it meets the general standard. Only I can’t help but feel it lacking the homey taste many Malaysian’s seek when eating this dish.
Side note: The restaurant service is admittedly not the best. Can be a bit or a minor nuisance getting the attention of the wait staff.
