Desserts are made of butter, sugar, milk, and loads of love. Did you know that nearly 41% of consumers eat dessert after a meal, at least once a week? Interestingly, dairy-free is no longer a dessert deal-breaker: 31% of consumers say they're willing to try dairy-free desserts!

abillion looks at 5 popular American desserts that have found a sweet spot among our members.

1. Chocolate Chip Cookie

Remember the episode from Friends where Monica tries to figure out Phoebe’s grandma’s secret chocolate chip cookie recipe? She realizes that Phoebe's grandma didn't have a secret recipe and probably got the recipe from the back of the Nestle's chocolate chips, just like the rest of us!

In fact, the famous Nestlé chocolate chip cookie recipe was invented by accident! American chef Ruth Wakefield while baking a batch of cookies ran out of Baker's chips and ended up using Nestle's chips and thus born the amazing chocolate chip cookies. Nestlé paid Wakefield for her recipe and the rest is history!

No cookie is more American than the classic chocolate chip cookie. Check out some amazing vegan chocolate chip cookies from Simple Truth, Lenny&Larry's and Sprouts Farmers Market that're worth trying.

2. Apple Pie

Have you heard of this common phrase, “As American as apple pie”? Truth be told, Apple pie isn’t even American! The longstanding symbol of America was first originated in England in 1381. The first recorded recipe used figs, raisins, pears, and saffron in addition to apples.

4. Cheesecake

Cheesecake is a beloved dessert around the world. While many assume that it has its origins in New York, it actually dates back 4,000 years ago in Greece.

The typical New York cheesecake uses a cream cheese base which gives it a rich, dense, smooth, and creamy consistency. In 1929, Arnold Reuben, owner of the legendary Turf Restaurant, claimed that his family developed the first cream-cheese cake recipe while other bakeries relied on cottage cheese.

5. Donuts

This quintessentially American fried dessert is the world’s favorite. Believe it or not, National Donut Day is a thing!

Donuts were introduced to America by the Dutch in New Amsterdam as oil cakes or fried cakes. It was introduced as a ball-like structure but the Americans put a ring in the center creating the modern donut.
