I finally made it to the Dysphoria/Euphoria exhibition this afternoon 🏳️⚧️ it is an exhibition featuring artwork and interviews by transgender people, organized by Rainbow Families SG, Trans Befrienders and Heckin Unicorn for Transgender Awareness Week . For those who are unfamiliar, transgender is an umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the sex to which they were assigned at birth.
I spent most of my time there talking to people. As people pointed out, it is a different experience for cisgender people like myself, who come to learn and understand more about trans people. Whereas for transgender people, it is an avenue for them to seek support and validation.
The key message by the transgender interviewees to society is: being transgender is not a choice. No one would put themselves through the kind of physical, mental and social suffering and turmoil because it is "trendy" or "just to use the women's bathroom". They are born that way and it's a matter of accepting themselves when society is constantly telling them otherwise. I believe that every human being deserves basic respect and to be safe to be themselves. Through my art and in my life, it is my mission to raise awareness for and help marginalized groups be included.
The first photo is a note to trans people (except the one on the top left by someone else). Last image has a hoodie - a baggy clothing many trans people feel comfortable in. My dear trans friends, you deserve nothing but the best and I'm rooting for you all the way 🏳️⚧️ you are beautiful whole human beings and no one can take that away from you. There will always be haters and their opinions are out of our control and really don't matter. We must learn to filter out unhelpful things. Focus on the things and people that support you and what is within your control. Do what you need to do for you. You can do this. 🏳️⚧️
