It’s been a few years since Greece went through one of the worst economic recessions in history. Prime Minster Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece is a country that’s clearly turning a page. “It’s leaving behind a decade of crises, of pain. And I think it’s a country that is really looking to embrace the challenges of the future,” he said. They’re also aiming to improve on their sustainability efforts, yay! 🥳
Greece is aiming to be carbon-neutral by 2050. In the tourism sector, they expect to see a rise in sustainable hotels across the country. At one hotel, MOD Santorini, there are no plastic bottles and the food served is vegan. Their rooms offer a sweeping view of the ocean horizon.
From recycling waste programs to prioritizing biodiversity conservation, Turkey is also becoming a force for eco-tourism. One of their initiatives, their Green City Action Plan, aims to improve public transportation to reduce emissions. This is incredible for some cities in Turkey like Izmir, as they’re more vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate disasters such as drought, flood, and extreme heat. We love to see these changes made at the top.
