[EMERGENCY] Our impact partner in Brazil, Santuario Vale da Rainha, was recently granted custody by local courts of 332 abused and abandoned calves. That’s double the number of animals under their care!
They received many requests to go to Cunha as soon as news broke that the calves were in bad shape, cruelly abandoned with no food or water. Although several other NGOs stepped up, many lacked experience with large animals.
The transportation alone can cause fatal injuries to the emaciated animals. Hence, Vale da Rainha has temporarily rented a farm in Cunha to care for the animals until they safely reach their sanctuary 400km away.
Their budget has skyrocketed due to the hire of one veterinarian and an intern, two security guards, and four employees to manage the day-to-day labor—feeding, making fences and improvised roofs, containing the animals for treatment. The rent, food, water, medication, and overall care cost an additional US$25,000 (approx.) per month.
