I love #fucuk so much; fried, baked, cooked in soup, steamed, whatever you do it just comes out tasting gloriously of the best parts of #beancurd while giving you that excellent texture ready to soak up whatever broth or grease you've chosen to keep it company 😊 On this occasion I pressed it into service with a coconut rendang curry, and it didn't disappoint 😉

Fried Bean Curd Sheets & My Struggle with them

Feb 02 2022

We bought this fried beancurd
sheets from Sheng Siong Supermarket.

I was first introduced to this product by my mum when we went over for steamboat during Chinese New Year some years ago. It was so delicious!

This product used non-GMO soybeans✅ (1st photo)

The ingredients are simple✅ (3rd photo)

There is also no preservatives✅

It is widely available in most supermarkets and minimarts and comes in different Brand’s✅

Now, I come to the tough part of this review. Palm Oil. I struggle a lot with palm oil in between these three significant events.

(1) When I first came to learn about palm oil, it was from a health perspective. Palm oil is highly processed and has very high saturated fats as compared to other oil, making it an unhealthy choice for cooking.

Let takes a look at the nutrition facts. (4th photo) One pack is 200g. Each pack has two servings. For each 100g, which is half a pack, a person is consuming 29g of saturated fats.

As an absolute number by its own, it doesn’t really make an impact. As a percentage, it drives the message home. A person is consuming 144% of his or her daily value of saturated fats.

Just by eating half a packet of fried beancurd sheets. Not to mention about other food that one could be eating in that meal alone, and also throughout the day. They will all add up to a significant amount.

(2) Secondly, when Singapore suffered from seasonal serious haze and air pollution, I read and learnt how farmers burnt the land to grow the palm oil plantations.

(3) Thirdly, after I watched Jane Goodall’s Masterclass. In one of the scene, it showed a surviving lone orangutan 🦧 on a lone bare tree that stood on a burnt piece of agricultural land for palm trees. In another scene, it showed an orangutan recused from a stream, burnt and hurt while escaping from the fire.

I stopped buying products with palm oil when I know it is not healthy for my children and hubby.

When I knew about the burning of land for palm oil plantations, I stopped buying products with palm oil. I don’t want to be a part of this.

After watching Jane Goodall, I took her call to stop buying products with palm oil.

It wasn’t easy. Palm oil is widely used in so many products, especially Asian, here in Singapore. It is really challenging to find one that don’t use palm oil. It is like searching for a needle in the haystack.

As a mummy, it isn’t easy to uphold the bigger purpose and having to say no to yummy pastries made with palm oil. It is heart aching to see my children putting back a product, and not able to find any better alternatives.

Sometimes, hubby overlooked the ingredients and bought products with palm oil. As they have been bought, I would just use them.

There is a brand of Tom Yum paste, that tastes really good, and its ingredients are good too, except for the palm oil. Our family loves it, especially my elder daughter and my mum. But, I just couldn’t find any alternative better than this, and I bought it.

It was like a tennis 🎾 game, the ball going to and fro endlessly. Palm oil, no palm oil, palm oil, no palm oil. Yes, no, yes, no. It is so draining and tiring.

After reading his first weeklywins post by David at abillion, I decided to take it easy during this Chinese New Year.

Just for this festive, I allowed this fried beancurd sheets for steamboat. My family is so happy, and I felt lighter.

RM8.30 from Star Grocer.

Bought this product for the explicitly 'vegan' claim on it #forthedollar.

I had
it unfried and added to a mushroom pasta where it added a silky texture to the dish. And I had fried it up here crispy, where it can be eaten on its own or added to another dish (eg. typically curry noodles).

You get quite a large number of sheets, and it's pretty convenient to use.
