Singers of the Oceans
Did you know that whales are some of the best singers? It’s true, their songs are complex sequences that they learn from each other and consist of a repetitive string of low-pitched whistles and sounds.
Songs are an important part of whale culture and their beautiful songs can last for days. It’s interesting that their songs sound remarkably similar to human music. With a vocal range of up to 7 octaves, they are a good matchup for even the best human singers ever. They are also the loudest singers with blue whales producing sounds at 180 decibels.
What exactly they are singing about is hard to tell but as they often sing to attract potential mates I suppose it’s a ballad-type song like “I will always love you”:). They also change their songs for every breeding season, so as not to become boring, unlike some human singers that sing the same songs for years;).
Whales are amazing creatures, very smart as well, with brains very similar to humans. Blue whales are also the largest animal that ever lived, much larger than any dinosaur and over 30 times heavier than an average elephant. They also have the biggest heart which weighs around 180 kg.
So, whales are great singers with big hearts, and yet many whale species are endangered and some even face extinction. The cause…well, you guessed it. Besides them being amazing personalities they also have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment and a significant role in capturing carbon from the atmosphere.
We have to do better to protect them before it’s too late. Whale hunting and using whales in the entertainment industry belong to the past. Please don’t support these cruel practices with your hard-earned cash.
Let’s make sure the whales continue singing for the millennia to come. Just like the whales the whole of nature is singing, all the time, we just have to start listening and take better care of it.
Stay kind my friends 💖 🐳🐋
