Noticed anything new on some of the product pages on abillion?! We’re the app for impact and this is one of the many ways to show it. We all have the power to make a positive impact on the environment through our daily choices; from the food we eat, to the way we commute to work every day and the products we buy.

Our data team at abillion have conducted extensive research to determine the carbon emissions saved by consuming vegan products compared to their non-vegan counterparts. We have now integrated this information into our selection of product pages by adding a new green icon indicating an estimate of the CO2 emissions avoided by choosing that particular vegan product.

We want to motivate and empower all of our members to make more sustainable choices that have a significant positive impact on the environment, while supporting our mission to inspire 1 billion to become vegan by 2030.

Why are we measuring CO2 emissions?

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are directly linked to energy consumption, primarily from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which releases CO2 into the atmosphere. The more energy consumed, the more CO2 is emitted. The link between CO2 emissions and energy consumption can be measured by an emissions factor, which measures the amount of CO2 emitted per unit of energy consumed. For example, the emissions factor for coal is generally higher than that for natural gas because burning coal releases more CO2 per unit of energy than burning natural gas.

Animals and animal-based products need more energy and have a larger carbon footprint. The production of meat and dairy products, for example, tend to have higher carbon emissions compared to plant-based alternatives. By reducing consumption or shifting to lower-carbon alternatives, we can help to reduce CO2 emissions and reduce the impact of climate change. By making sustainable choices we can reduce our ecological footprint and promote a more promising future for generations to come.

How do we measure the CO2 emissions?

The green CO2 icon on abillion indicates the estimated percentage of CO2 emissions saved by the sustainable vegan option instead of a non-vegan option. This calculation is made by comparing the emissions of a specific product category to the emissions of its plant-based alternatives. The percentage displayed on the product page represents the amount of CO2 emissions saved by choosing the vegan option.

Together, we can create a positive impact on the environment and pave the way for a better tomorrow!

Good initiative! Let's hope carbon footprint information becomes mandatory on every food label, together with total transparency about the source of food AND the animal suffering involved in creating it. 👏👏👏
